A new washer and dryer can look ready to use the moment it arrives. The hookups behind the machines tell a different story. Start With the Laundry Space, Not the Appliance

Overtightening can damage threads or washers.
The drain hose should sit securely in the standpipe without being sealed airtight. It needs an air gap to prevent siphoning and drainage problems. Do not force the hose too far down the pipe, and secure it so it cannot jump out when the washer pumps out water. A drain that backs up, drains slowly, or smells strongly should be addressed before the first wash cycle.
Dryer power or gas supply
Electric dryers require a dedicated high-voltage outlet. Depending on the home and dryer model, this may be a three-prong or four-prong connection. Never use an extension cord, adapter, or standard household outlet for an electric dryer. If the cord style does not match the outlet, the dryer cord may need to be changed by someone who understands the terminal block and grounding requirements.
Gas dryers need a properly installed gas shutoff valve, approved flexible gas connector, and correct gas supply. Gas hookups are not a DIY shortcut. A poor connection can cause a dangerous leak, and an improperly adjusted dryer can create combustion or venting issues. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting where possible. Thin foil or plastic flex duct can crush easily and collect lint in its ridges. Keep the run short and straight, with as few turns as possible. The vent should terminate outdoors, not in an attic, garage, crawl space, or inside the laundry room.

Remove every shipping bolt, brace, foam insert, or transit material from a new washer before use. Shipping bolts hold the drum in place during transport. Running the machine with them installed can cause severe vibration and internal damage. Keep the bolts in a labeled bag in case the washer is moved later.
Dryers should also sit level, although they are less likely to move during operation. A level dryer helps support proper drum operation and keeps the door aligned.
Test the Installation Before You Leave It Alone
Do not begin with a full load of laundry. Run a short washer cycle while staying nearby. Watch the water hose connections, shutoff valves, drain hose, and standpipe for leaks or overflow. Listen for unusual banging, vibration, or drain gurgling. Then run the dryer for several minutes and confirm it heats correctly and exhausts air outdoors, if applicable.
